The University Ecologies team invites you to join us for the first session of the Commons and Commoning study group on Thursday, September 18 from 1:00-3:00pm at The Center for the Humanities (48 Professors Row in Medford). Attached to the Mellon Foundation project, University Ecologies and the Question of the Commons, we will meet every 2-3 weeks to discuss some readings and host open discussions on how we might nurture university environments otherwise. Readings are brief, snacks are plentiful, conversation is welcoming and generous. All students, faculty, and staff are welcome.

This Thursday, we will start by discussing the following:

  • Raymond Williams (1974). “Enclosures, Commons, and Communities” in The Country and the City. (14 pgs)
  • Global History of Capitalism Project (2022). “Enclosing the English Commons: Property, Productivity, and the Making of Modern Capitalism.” (10 pgs)
  • Diggers and Levelers (1649). “A Declaration from the Poor Oppressed People of England.” (4 pgs)

For copies of the reading, or further information, please contact Modhumita Roy (modhumita.roy@tufts.edu) or Alex Blanchette (alex.blanchette@tufts.edu).
