Participatory Design Workshop for Picnic Activation Set, 3/26

Join artist Coco Allred for a workshop on Picnic Activation Set, a participatory installation commissioned by the University Ecologies and Question of the Commons project. We will explore the history of the picnic as a form of Victorian leisure in the development of new public spaces, picnicking within labor activism, and within changing ecologies of the 21st century. We will then go to Back Bay Fens Park to create large-scale forms in response to the landscape and write prompts and questions to help us orient to it. The shapes we create will be inform design choices for the Picnic Activation Sets that can be arranged to create context to try out new social formations and interactions that are not just human but with other living beings. These shapes will be recreated in fabric with collaged text developed in workshops that offer entry points to orient to place, encompassing its ecological history and present, representation, sense of public, and social uses.
