This Colloquium is the culmination of a year-long working group in which we read, discussed, and shared initial work on the construction of saudade as a cornerstone of Brazilian and Portuguese national identities. We want to understand how the history of saudade—as a concept, feeling, word—is inextricably tied to the transatlantic history of Portuguese colonialism, not only in Brazil but also in Africa.

In this colloquium, our goal is to move beyond the idea of saudade as an untranslatable concept, approaching it instead as a dynamic, evolving semantic field that shapes collective emotions, activates transatlantic memories, and influences subject formation in diasporic and migratory contexts within the Luso-Afro-Brazilian world.
