Haley Mullen

Haley Mullen is an incoming Postdoctoral Scholar with the Department of Community Health, where she works on the American Medical Directories project. Her research lies at the intersection of GIScience, environmental justice, and social epidemiology, with a focus on how spatial patterns of segregation and the built environment shape health disparities. She recently earned her PhD in Geographical Sciences from the University of Maryland, College Park, where her dissertation used geospatial methods to examine the role of residential racial segregation as a fundamental cause of chronic health disparities. Prior to starting her PhD, Haley was a graduate student and research assistant at the University of Michigan, where she contributed to several nationally representative datasets related to segregation and neighborhood health with UMich’s Institute for Social Research.

Haley’s work integrates spatial data science and machine learning, drawing on experience with large-scale geospatial datasets, electronic health records, and critical environmental justice research. She has published on the legacy of historic redlining, environmental justice screening tools, and disparities in neurodevelopmental outcomes from toxic chemical exposures. She also has 8+ years of teaching experience, and has taught undergraduate and graduate coursework on GIS, cartography, and spatial statistics.
