Namrata Jain
Department of History
Dr. Namrata Jain is a Ph.D. candidate in History at Tufts University, researching the modern history of South Asia with a focus on gender, material history, sartorial systems, and consumption. Her dissertation examines the intersection of clothing, textile production, and consumption practices with subjectivity, taste & desire, and political economy in colonial and postcolonial India.
Jain holds a Ph.D. in English Literature and Gender and an M.Phil. in English Literature from Jawaharlal Nehru University, and a Master's in Asian Studies with a Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies Certificate from Ohio University, where she was a Fulbright Scholar (2017–2018). Before joining Tufts, she was Assistant Professor of Literature at the University of Delhi.
At Tufts, she is a recipient of the Dean's Fellowship (2021-26) and a Department of History Research Grant (2022). Her recent work includes the paper "Khadi: A Weft and Warp of Political Fashionability and Urban Intellectualism?" presented at the 46th Annual Susman Conference at Rutgers University (2024).
Jain's broader scholarship spans Modern South Asia, Indian literature, performance studies, and gender, with publications and invited talks on gender, labor, and representation in modern Indian theater and literatures of India.
