Decolonizing the History of North Africa in Antiquity with Dr. Bruce Hitchner, 2/7
Fung House
The field of Classical Studies has come under scrutiny and criticism in recent years, for its perceived elitism and and association with Euro-Atlantic nationalism, imperialism, colonialism, racism and white supremacism. This lecture will explore how these issues and the debates surrounding have impacted our knowledge and understanding of one particular region of the Mediterranean in Antiquity: North Africa (the modern Maghreb). It will also reflect on the evolution of the field immediately following the end of the colonial period, as well as recent and emerging trends in research and fieldwork.
Join us on February 7th at lunch to discuss this topic with historian and Classical Studies department chair, Dr. Bruce Hitchner. A light lunch will be served.
