The Center for Public History is currently accepting applications for the 2026-2027 Gerald Gill Fellowship Program. Student research is a major component of and contributor to the Center’s work and longevity. Named in honor of Tufts Professor Gerald R. Gill (1948-2007), the Gill Fellowship supports engaged scholarship in public history, broadly defined. Projects may emerge from a variety of disciplines and interdisciplinary programs and may support undergraduate and graduate research. The Gerald Gill Fellows serve as ambassadors of engaged scholarship and active citizenship on campus. We seek Fellows whose engaged scholarship, citizenship, and participation will inspire their peers to think critically within and beyond the Tufts campus.

The 2026-27 fellowship is focused especially on contributions to the university-wide Tufts project on Slavery, Colonialism, and their Legacies. The Slavery, Colonialism, and their Legacies at Tufts University (SCL) initiative illuminates the history of slavery and colonialism within and beyond Tufts, shaping the future of how universities study their institutional pasts. You can read the full application materials here.
