On October 6th, Tufts will celebrate the installation of our 14th University President, Sunil Kumar. Events are scheduled from September 30th through October 7th in celebration of this induction.
Here are some highlights in the Humanities:
Arts Showcase- October 1, 7-8:30 p.m. (Cohen Auditorium): In honor of President Kumar’s inauguration, this event highlights the remarkable talents of Tufts students featuring an assortment of short, student-led music, dance, and theater performances.
Welcoming President Sunil Kumar: SMFA at Tufts, October 2, 4-5 p.m. (SMFA Atrium & Andersen Auditorium): Please join us in welcoming 14th President of Tufts University, Sunil Kumar, to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts on Monday, October 2, 2023, from 4 - 5 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided, before brief remarks and a tour of the SMFA Art Galleries.
Centering Indigenous Voices in the Arts- October 3, 4-6 p.m. (Aidekman Arts Center): Join Claudia Mattos Avolese, senior lecturer, visual and material studies; Mary McNeill, assistant professor, studies in race, colonialism, and the diaspora; and Lily Mengesha, assistant professor, theatre, dance and performance studies, for a tour and discussion of "Véxoa: We Know," which brings together the work of Indigenous artists of Brazil to explore the political power of contemporary art. We will explore the academic museum's potential to serve as a nexus for wider campus conversation. Please RSVP.
Exhibit Opening - The Charge and the Challenge: Tufts Presidents from Ballou to Kumar- October 6, 4-6 p.m. (Tisch Library): This exhibit, drawn from the collections of the Tufts Archival Research Center, offers a glimpse at each president and the highlights of their tenures. Following President Kumar's inauguration ceremony, archivists will be on hand to discuss exhibit highlights and present a selection of presidential artifacts from the Tufts Charter to Jumbo's Tail. All are welcome to drop in any time between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. (more information here).
