Dana Foundation
Neuroscience and Society Pilot Project Grants
Deadline: LOIs accepted on a rolling basis though the end of each calendar year; timeline for additional phases unknown
Budget/Amount: generally up to $150,000 for 12-18-month projects; no indirect costs
Purpose: Supports projects in Neuroscience and Society (with a focus on the interdisciplinary nature of neuroscience, including connections to non-science disciplines (e.g., ethics, law, humanities, arts, social sciences, policy, journalism, education, and public engagement) in the following program areas: Educations; Frontiers, and Next Gen. Each program area has stated priorities/areas of interest, which may change over time; however, LOIs are not required to reflect those specific priorities. Dana Opportunistic program is for projects that don’t align with three primary program areas.
Education--particularly interested in pilot experiential learning programs in Neuroscience & Society for middle and/or high school students (not undergraduate, graduate, or postdoc training).
Frontiers--particularly interested in projects that develop practical engagement resources—such as toolkits, playbooks, or roadmaps—that empower practitioners (e.g., neuroscientists, policymakers, community leaders) to connect different communities, build trust-based relationships, and foster collaboration.
NextGen--particularly interested in pilot experiential training programs in Neuroscience & Society for graduate students. We seek proposals that target graduate students in neuroscience, the humanities, social sciences, law, medicine, and other fields relevant to Neuroscience & Society.
Eligibility: Projects at U.S.-based 501c3 organizations (unless preapproved). The Foundation does not fund purely empirical or conceptual biomedical and/or behavioral research projects without a substantive, active emphasis on addressing complex societal problems. See FAQ for other areas they do not fund.
