Chance Bonar

Chance Bonar is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Center for the Humanities at Tufts University, whose research and teaching primarily focus on ancient Mediterranean religion, slavery, antisemitism, gender-based violence, and theories of authorship. He has two forthcoming projects: God, Slavery, and Early Christianity: Divine Possession and Ethics in the Shepherd of Hermas (Cambridge University Press) and The Author in Early Christian Literature (Cambridge Elements, Cambridge University Press). Additionally, he has published articles in Ancient Jew Review, the Journal of Late Antiquity, the Journal of Biblical Literature, Early Christianity, and Le Muséon. While at Tufts, he is pursuing research on the role of religious experiences in and around ancient Mediterranean slave revolts.

Chance completed his PhD at Harvard University in the Committee on the Study of Religion, and also holds an MAR from Yale Divinity School and a BA from St. Olaf College. Additionally, he has been a Lecturer of Advanced Greek at Harvard Divinity School, an Instructor of Theology at Boston College, and a William R. Tyler Fellow in Byzantine Studies at Dumbarton Oaks.
